HEDGE FUND NEWS
@ Tue 26 September 2006 : GMT

FINTAG COMMENT

The blow-up of Amaranth is still being analysed. Will it prompt the regulators to act harder or back off? If the winners are Investment Banks then who cares?

Fund Listings continue in the UK and Dexion is another to follow this route.

BLOW UPS

Those obnoxious hedge fund managers and their super-rich investors think they've been trapped in a nightmare this month. They haven't. They've been trapped in a movie. Namely: a 2006 remake of the old Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd classic, "Trading Places." In the film, two tycoons expect an orange juice shortage and try to corner the market. When it turns out there is no shortage, the price collapses in panic selling and they lose their shirts. This time it's oil, not OJ. But it works the same way. Amaranth Advisors, a Connecticut hedge fund open only to the super rich, just lost a huge chunk of money - $6 billion - on oil and gas prices. And it's not alone.
BostonHerald

For BloggingStocks.com, I've written a couple posts on the $6 billion loss at the hedge fund, Amaranth Advisors LLC. In a conference call last week, the founder said he "feels bad." Interestingly enough there are some firms that may actually be feeling very good because of the big problems.

Federal prosecutors on Monday said they charged former hedge fund manager Hilary Shane with five counts of securities fraud and insider trading in the stock of Compudyne Corp.
