FINTAG COMMENT

Sorry about the delay but stuck in airport. I have no idea where I am flying too, why I am going there and who I am. But not to worry for I will just follow the rest of the customers and clamber on board and go with the flow. I have been told every 5 minutes not to smoke, to carry photo id at all times and to report people forcing packages onto me.

You see we cannot do anything without instruction. There are arrows showing me where to walk, adverts telling me why I should have a "5th Ave Flair with Wall Street Style" Tumi leather brief case and the smell of food at every turn to entice me into a world of trans-fat and sugar coated chemicals.

Life is much easier if you go do as everyone else and this is what we have all been doing this year. Strip out the government sponsored banks and the S&P is not looking healthy at all.

Distorting markets is like putting flouride in toothpaste and our tooth will eventually decay.

Corporates are about demand and supply. Demand has been fueled by debt that cannot be paid off. Count how many unsold cars there are rotting in Nevada or how quickly the Tumi leather bag is in the sales. Tumi is a classic example of a company trying to generate demand. It used to make very strong luggage that would last generations. But that is not how to run a business so they have branched out into purples and camouflage in an attempt to create demand for goods that the people don't really want.

Oops, my name has been called and unless I get to the gate in 5 minutes my original 1980's tumi luggage will be thrown off the plane.

Best go and do what I am told.

CITADEL PLANS LEVERAGED LOAN TRADING UNIT

emii

Citadel Investment Group is seeking to launch a leveraged-loan-trading unit, Bloomberg reports. The hedge fund firm, which recently founded an investment-banking unit, unsuccessfully tried to recruit four members of Barclays Capital's loan sales and trading team for the same.

Macquarie Group and Jefferies Group are also setting up operations for trading leveraged loans. These loans are used for funding corporate buyouts. Over $57.1 billion of the debt has been underwritten in 2009, down from $229.7 billion in the same period of 2008.
Fintag says
I love that. Leveraged loans. What next? Levered leverage?

HOUSES GO FOR A SONG IN THE HAMPTONS

telegraph

Long known as the summer playground of New York's rich and famous, the Hamptons, which is made up of a number of exclusive townships most of which comprise the word Hampton, is suffering from the downturn in the American property market.

Where once houses were sold before they were even officially put up for sale, today the property market is struggling.

Recent data shows that in Suffolk County, in which the Hamptons sit, there were 154 new foreclosures in July, up 105pc from July 2008.

Brand names don't always last but I don't think this is a big deal. The lobster still tastes the same.

PENSION FUND THAT DROPPED £8BN PAYS £1.8M IN BONUSES

telegraph

The Universities Superannuation Scheme, which invests the money of 264,000 higher-education employees across Britain, was heavily invested in the sinking equities market.

It paid out £1.76m in bonuses to its investment staff, as university staff face up to 6,000 redundancies this year and pay rises of just 0.5pc, according to the University and College Union.

The USS employs 57 investment staff, who could be in line for bonus payments of up to £630,000 in 2012, £ 825,000 in 2013 and £450,000 in 2014 if they hit their long-term investment targets.

However, in its annual report USS said: "It is currently considered that the likelihood of payments being made from these plans is low, because the target set for outperformance will be difficult to achieve."
Fintag says
Should one laugh or cry? This really is the sign of the times.

FSA TO PROBE KEY BARCAP BONUS DEALS

cityam

CITY watchdog the Financial Services Authority (FSA) last night said it will demand to see the contracts of five traders being hired by Barclays Capital, following claims they have been lured to the group with a bonus deal worth £30m.

The FSA warned it will be “rigorously enforcing” its new rules on bonuses, which hope to reduce unnecessary risk taking.
Fintag says
The FSA doesn't know whether it is coming or going. Probing. Is that the same as restricting or censoring? I don't see anything in UK law that restricts companies from paying its staff if they are successful. Is there?

CITCO, DEUTSCHE BANK TAKE TOP SPOTS IN ADMINISTRATOR RANKINGS

finalternatives

Several newcomers are shaking up the top ranks of hedge fund administrators, a new survey shows.

While Citco Fund Services held on to the top spot among major providers in the annual Global Custodian Hedge Fund Administration Survey, a pair of newcomers to the top 10 finished right behind it. Deutsche Bank Alternative Fund Services, which bought Hedgeworks in January, vaulted into second place, while SS&C Fund Services made its debut on the top 10 in third.
Fintag says
So we now see Tumi being threatened by Lulu Guinness and Kate Spade?

If Citco is a Lincoln Navigator are Hedgeworks and SS&C Hybrids?

I am very pleased that we have new and exciting entrants in the market place challenging the old dinosaurs.

HEDGE FUNDS SUED OVER FINANCING OF 'TERMINATOR' SEQUEL

finalternatives

Will The Terminator be back?

The producers of the fourth iteration of the classic action movie have sued a hedge fund and one of its former employees. The hedge fund, Pacificor, loaned Derek Anderson and Victor Kubiceck $30 million to buy the rights to the Terminator series.

Anderson and Kubiceck say Pacificor and former employee Kurt Benjamin, who they say arranged the loans, engaged in fraudulent double-dealing and are now trying to take control of the Terminator franchise. Last week, Pacificor filed a lien against Dominion Group, which is controlled by the Terminator producers. The hedge fund's loan was secured by the Terminator rights.
Fintag says
No wonder. The film was one of the worst I have ever seen.

UK INFLATION UNCHANGED AT 1.8%

financial times

Inflation was stronger than expected last month, remaining at 1.8 per cent after economists had forecast that it would fall to 1.5 per cent.

The unchanged annual rate of consumer price inflation came in spite of falling prices of food and drink but as the prices of games, toys and hobbies rose in July.
Fintag says
...then the Bank of England ought to put up interest rates then. Deadly silence.

@anon 11.59 I have seen article. There is not enough space here to answer it but I sent it to five women pals of varying demographic and we all agreed that quite often the "all the good men are taken" view is an excuse used by women to justify going out with bad boys and then falling on their (our) heads. I will blog about it: thank you I was searching for my next commentary. @moron: I can tolerate most remarks but please don't use the word 'rape' lightly Moron.

@anon 11.59 I do think the hypothesis that if someone is attached value goes up makes sense though anyone wanting to 'poach' another's partner should remember that second marriages statistically end in disaster. I will end with saying I just read that men who snore die faster. Moron..

Wrong. I'm a man, so don't want to meet up to see "what you need". If I did, I would end up beating you to death. I'm 210 pounds of pure dynamite, with a 10 inch fuse.

anon 16.21 bot some gbpusd puts as BoE extending gilt purchases beyond the FED treasury purchases, therefore expect greater downside for cable, especially as stocks lose ground.

SPX look for a break of 1016 as a sign to buy...we need a quick test otherwise I see lots of downside, till at least 958

Normally would have to pay 2 & 20 for such advice...but I offer for free!!
