Yesterday I went undercover to witness mindless vandalism, listen to naïve rantings and take revealing photos. Oh, and to twitter the experience too.
The first G20 protesters were on bicycles. About 20 of them. The boarded up buildings and shops was a bit over the top although thought the main target, RBS, should have at least made an attempt at boarding up its ground floor windows.
I went away thinking it was all a damp squid (sic). Sitting in a Starbucks I had a green tea and went back out. I headed to the music where a boom box was pounding out radical songs (on one of the air vents at Bank tube) and within seconds a curtain of dayglo clad policeman had trapped us all like wasps in a jam jar. All exits were closed.
So like a bunch of naughty schoolchildren, the protesters started to behave like them. Picnics were had, slogans scrawled on the walls of buildings and dope smoked.
The Bank of England was soon covered in posters and graffiti and I had worked out a ratio of tourists / camera people / media to protesters of 10 to 1. It was silly. Photos were taken of everything. The cameras goaded a couple of Italian (probably) anarchists to ram a pole into an RBS window and kids ran around thinking they were members of the IRA.
Later we had some pushing and shoving and the party broke into pieces. And then I left with lots of photos and comfort that these protesters were students and 1960s drop outs. So it will soon be forgotten about. The media has focused on some violence but what I saw was mostly bored journalists and twitters and people urinating.
The love in at the G20 between 2 grown men was shall we say, embarrassing, and the very naughty German and French leaders led by example. The whole event will cost millions. Clearing up the mess and clearing up the mess.
World leaders are set to declare an end to unfettered capitalism at a G20 summit on Thursday after France and Germany demanded they act fast on promises to prevent a repeat of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s.
A communique drafted for release at a G20 summit in London, obtained by Reuters, signaled that leaders would submit large hedge funds to supervision for the first time and enhance regulation through a new agency and a beefed-up International Monetary Fund.
Fintag says Good luck. What concerned me yesterday were the lack of facilities. Like toilets. I mean, even the police were struggling ...is urinating against the Bank of England a criminal act?
Shortly before Bernard L. Madoff confessed to a Ponzi scheme that burned through tens of billions of dollars, partners of Fairfield Greenwich Group, one of Mr. Madoff's biggest feeder funds, were on track to collect a combined $117 million in pay for 2008.
The estimated compensation figures were disclosed in an exhibit to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Massachusetts securities regulators, who contend that Fairfield's inadequate due diligence on Mr. Madoff's operations amounted to a fraud on its investors.
Fintag says Nice. But at the time they didn't know they were money launderers. Or did they?
times says " Bernard Madoff feeder hedge fund, Fairfield Greenwich, accused of deception "

In the fall of 2006, Congress passed the Credit Rating Agency Reform Act, providing the SEC for the first time with authority to supervise credit rating agencies. Using this authority that became effective in June 2007, the Commission has adopted two major rulemakings, has conducted an extensive 10-month examination of three major credit rating agencies, and has several pending proposals to further the Act's purpose of promoting accountability, transparency, and competition in the rating industry.
World leaders will pledge to regulate major hedge funds for the first time and set up a new oversight board to monitor the global financial system, according to a draft of the G20 communique.
The draft, obtained by Reuters from delegation officials at the G20 summit, also said leaders would vow to cooperate over economic policies to restore global growth and "refrain from competitive devaluation of our currencies."
Fintag says That is going to make a lot of difference.
DUTCH PENSION FUND INCREASES HEDGE FUNDS WEIGHTING
Dutch pension fund ABP has increased its exposure weightings to hedge funds by 1% in an attempt to cut its investment risk profile over the next five years.
This increased hedge fund exposure is part of a wider recovery plan submitted by ABP to the regulator, the De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch Central Bank), to achieve a cover ratio of at least 105% after five years.
The cover ratio measures the ratio between a fund's assets and future liabilities. It fell to 90% at the end of 2008 from 140% at the end of 2007. The drop was mostly due to a fall in stock prices which pushed up the value of future liabilities.
Fintag says Nice Dutch people.
financial news says " GLG Partners' global equities fund ranks last "
Hedge funds are back in the game. After a dismal 2008 that saw record losses and record withdrawals, investors are tentatively returning to the sector, prompted by signs that funds made money even as markets plunged this year.
Highbridge Capital Management, once the world's biggest hedge fund, was a big winner, with $1bn (€757m) of net inflows this year, including $225m from majority owner JPMorgan, according to people familiar with the fund. It ended the quarter with $20bn under management.
Fintag says The good times are back.

The policeman urinating in the corner would be branded a sex offender in the USA. The man in the wheelchair is not really a banker.
