FINTAG COMMENT

Key person dependency.

The problem with hedge funds is that they are run by people. People, who are critical to its success. Just like this blog. If I go on a 48 hour bender entertaining clients, you, my readers, start feeling vulnerable and look at redeeming from fintag.

Let's take Quant funds for example. They are computer programs written in c#, VB or Java and replace the key person dependency problem. However, quant funds have been behaving badly and like equity long short are not where your money should be right now. Personally I would recommend [Editor: No recommendations, sorry] CTA, Global Macro (like me) or later on this year event driven strategies like equity arbitrage which benefit from drifting markets.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not work for, or am a principal at Marshall Wace despite being in Asia at the same time as them. So far we have not clashed in the same clubs or fought after the same entertainment. My thumbs maybe numb [Editor: uh?], my sleep deprived eyes red and my aching dance limbs sodden but my brain is alert as ever. It is a shame that the media is losing its way as the key stories I am hearing repeated over and over again are not being reported.

Maybe I have some sort of illness. Take this picture. It is a Japanese loo. It has hundreds of buttons and although the objective is flush away my alcohol saturated urine, I don't know where to start. A bit like journalists trying to understand why banks like Barclays continue to lie that all is fine when they needed some help from overseas.

Order will be resumed next week so until then, enjoy your shorting.

For those who thought I was doing a Sammy Israel, I am sorry to disappoint.

PRIME BROKERS FACE CHANGING LANDSCAPE

icfa

Convergence between hedge fund and traditional long-only investment strategies is re-shaping the business of prime brokers and global custodians, according to new research by the Vodia Group.

Prime brokerage continues to grow by impressive bounds despite the credit crisis and collapse of Bear Stearns, Vodia said, driven principally by the rapid expansion of traditional asset managers into hedge funds, 130/30s and other leveraged trading vehicles.
Fintag says
...and they are going to make even more money out of it all. I was told yesterday that Goldman earned USD100m from prime broking GLG. Is this true? Probably.

MARSHALL WACE IN HONG KONG JV, PLANS ASIAN HEDGE FUNDS

finalternatives

U.K.-based hedge fund shop Marshall Wace is making Hong Kong its second home and drawing up plans for Asian-focused hedge funds later on this year.

The $14 billion firm has entered into a joint venture with Hong Kong-based GaveKal Holdings, a research and asset management firm, to manage both GaveKal's existing funds and launch new Asia-focused hedge funds. The JV, Marshall Wace GaveKal Asia Ltd, will officially kick off on July 1.

At the outset, GaveKal's existing Asian funds will give the JV some $300 million in assets under management.
Fintag says
Unless they can conform to Basle 2 legislation, this will not launch. It is true 5 years ago there were a handful of Asian managers and today there are over 400. The problem is most of them are pretty crap. Good luck to MW especially as Typhoon ridden and lung burning Hong Kong is not what it used to be.

US FEDERAL RESERVE KEEPS BENCHMARK FEDERAL FUNDS RATE ON HOLD AT 2%

finfacts

he US Federal Reserve today kept the benchmark Federal funds rate on hold at 2%.

The rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) concluded a two-day meeting on Wednesday on the state of the US economy.
Fintag says
Inflation threats persist so you choose to hold rates. So much for long term economic planning then.

INVESTORS' £4.5BN DEAL TO SHORE UP CAPITAL AT BARCLAYS

independent

Barclays has agreed a deal with five sovereign wealth funds that will see the investors pump up to £4.5bn into the bank. Barclays executives have spent much of the past week in talks with the investors hammering out details of the fundraising after the bank came under pressure from regulators to improve its capital strength.

Under the deal announced yesterday, Barclays will issue 1.57 million shares to raise £4.5bn "to strengthen its capital base and operate capital ratios that are ahead of its targets". The group said the move would also enable Barclays "to capture opportunities for growth", with about half the money slated for that objective.

The money is coming from five Middle-East ...
Fintag says
Bob Diamond told me that all was fine. I now it turns out he lied. Never trust an incompetent bank.

financial news says " Banks and hedge funds facing billions in losses on European rates bet "

KINETIC'S SHRIMPTON SAYS U.K. BANKS NOW IN `DIFFICULT PERIODS'

bloomberg

Andrew Shrimpton, a hedge fund adviser at Kinetic Partners, comments on the U.K. banking industry. He spoke in a Bloomberg Television interview in London today.

``The banks are going to go through difficult periods. There's bad debts. The housing market is falling. They're going to have to rebuild their balance sheets. The question is whether senior executives really understood this alphabet soup of structured products. I think the answer is they really didn't.

``There are fantastic opportunities for hedge funds in the distressed debt areas. There are some very shrewd fast-moving hedge funds out there. Hedge funds are already very transparent. There could be more transparency around the valuation process.''
Fintag says
A bit early in my book but the early birds are sitting on the fence.

HEDGE FUNDS DISCLOSE THEIR SHORT POSITIONS IN JOHNSTON PRESS

bloomberg

Hedge Funds including Renaissance Technologies LLC, Fox Point Capital Management LLC and Lone Pine Capital LLC disclosed short positions in Johnston Press Plc.

Renaissance revealed a 0.26 percent short position in the Edinburgh-based company in a Regulatory News Service statement yesterday; Fox Point disclosed June 23 its 0.78 percent position in a separate RNS statement; and Lone Pine Capital announced its 0.44 percent position in another RNS statement, also on June 23.
Fintag says
This is getting a bit boring now. Can I get off here?

"Contrary to popular belief, I do not work for, or am a principal at Marshall Wace" - your editor missed this, but I believe a proper denial would be "Contrary to popular belief, I do not work for, nor am I a principal at, Marshall Wace". Editorial oversight, or a clever way of hiding the truth in a denial?

Where are all those pics of Mrs. R we were promised?

I think you'll find it is Ms R, not Mrs.

Anyway, FT cannot be part of Marshall Wace otherwise he would be applauding the dead-in-the-water HFWG, seeing as that is Paul Marshall's baby.

That's the second recent photo of your urine in a toilet bowl - some sort of obsession?

Hello TC: It is Ms R..if I were Mrs R I would be given to wearing black stockings and seducing somebody's son but young men are not my weakness.

I suspect that while Fin is touring the fleshpots, sorry, high class entertainment venues of Asia etc, he needs to carry my pics close to remind him of something err, more wholesome...

Strangely he is possessive..yet do I question what he is off doing?

Finbar - you mentioned installing Ms R as temporary editor when you travel, but seem to have gone off the idea. How about installing Moron or his mysterious shadow?
